Tripping over Joy

What is the difference
Between your experience of Existence
And that of a saint?

The saint knows
That the spiritual path
Is a sublime chess game with God

And that the Beloved
Has just made such a Fantastic Move

that the saint is now continually
Tripping over Joy
And bursting out in Laughter
And saying, “I Surrender!”

Whereas, my dear,
I’m afraid you still think

You have a thousand serious moves.

~Hafiz

This speaks to me today. We are in the middle of mid-winter break and both of my children are sick, one with a high fever. As I was making them both tea, I looked out at the snow-covered landscape and saw these little dots of yellow joy masquerading as crocuses in the neighbor’s garden. I snapped some photos to share them with the world (that would be you).

Despite the sleepless night and the hard work of it, it’s also really beautiful. Their lips curling up in a little smiles of gratitude, little kisses and a hot, feverish hand put on my knee as I held my youngest. Or getting a text message from my ex thanking me for taking care of them and telling me how blessed they are to have me as a mom.

No matter what is before us, we can always choose to find the joy. I am filled with it today as I get a chance to serve Life with devotion to my daughters. As I type this, Alexandra is playing “Singing in the Rain”. How very fitting. ūüôā

I surrender!
